You know, I have been instructing people in the discipline of leadership development for nearly a decade and I can tell you that the process of leadership development is more about learning to lead and yourself than it is about persuading others to follow you.

People do not respond anywhere near as well to persuasion  as they do to a good example. In other words, leading other people is a natural ‘side effect’ of the ability to effectively lead yourself.

The reason why most people are not able to do this is because they lack the foundational point upon which one must build their own personal leadership. That one thing is certainty of direction.

As Napoleon Hill said in ‘Think and Grow Rich’ : “The world as a habit of making room for those whose thoughts and actions demonstrate to others that they know where they are going.”

This the core of all great leadership development. Think about it. When you are certain of where you are headed, how much easier is it to get back up and get moving again  when you get knocked down?

How much harder is it to give up when you are certain of your objective?

How much more likely is someone to follow you if you can show them that you know where you are going?

And finally :

How much more readily do people forgive your failures or faults when you are can demonstrate that you know for certain why you are taking the risks you are; that you have a positive outcome which you are determined to achieve no matter what?
