How to Speed Read People

21 August 2009

How you like would to be able to speed read anyone and nail their personality within less than thirty seconds? You know, when I first started coaching a lot of my colleges actually used to make a joke of how easily I could read people. I kind of toned it down because I somehow acquired the nickname “Hannibal Lector”. No , I never bit anyone’s face off.  ;-)

Anyway, while I definitely spent years marinating in human behavior to learn this, I have managed to come up with a simple way to speed read people.

Sure, you can’t find out everything about them. However, you can find out: if they are more inclined towards people or tasks, whether they value security more or excitement, their sense of humor and their communication style. If that would work for you, let’s get started.

First, there are basically four types of personalities which I identify by the colors: Red, Blue, Gold and Green. Sure, people are complex and these personality types are not all there is to it. However, they do tell you a LOT about the way that people process information. I’ll break the colors down, and then I’ll tell you a way to nail someone’s color in less than thirty seconds simply by hearing them speak.

Reds are task oriented more than people oriented. They are direct in their communication, tend to be more fact oriented than feeling oriented. They value excitement over security and they have a sarcastic sense of humor which can sometimes come off as mean. They are motivated by a challenge and work well under pressure.

Blues are more people oriented than task oriented. They are also direct in their communication but are more storytellers and tend to be more feeling oriented than fact oriented. They also value excitement over security and they have a slapstick sense of humor which can sometimes come off as obnoxious. They are motivated by fun and they tend to be comfortable under pressure.

Greens are more task oriented than people oriented. They are indirect in their communication and like the Reds, they also tend to be fact oriented rather than feeling oriented. They value security over excitement and have a very dry and clever sense of humor which can even come off as vague or obscure. They are motivated by being correct and tend to be less comfortable under pressure.

Golds are more people oriented than task oriented. They are indirect and diplomatic in their communication and like the Blues they tend to be more feeling oriented than fact oriented. Like Greens, they value security over excitement and have a light and silly sense of humor. They are motivated by comfort and relationships and tend to be less comfortable under pressure.

So , how do you read them? Listen to their voice patterns. Both Reds and Blues speak quickly. Golds and Greens speak slower. So the first thing you listen for is speed. Once you have that down you listen to tone. Greens and Reds are more monotone and Blues and Golds are more expressive in their communication. So Reds are fast and monotone. Blues are fast and expressive. Greens are slow and monotone and Golds are slow and expressive.

Easy enough?
