Low Sodium vs High Sodium

13 October 2009

Last of all we have sodium, this is probably the most difficult thing to cut back on because so many packaged and processed foods have it. Too much sodium, or salt, causes the body to retain water and to hold onto unnecessary weight. The more salt we eat the higher our blood pressure is going to be. Too much salt can also cause weakening bones and kidney disease. The following is a list of foods which are high in sodium. Again, when in doubt look at the labels.

High Sodium Foods

Bacon, sausage, hot dogs, luncheon meats, lunch meat, corned beef, canned fish and canned meats (See spam is not just bad on the internet lol)

Salted pretzels, crackers, potato chips.
Processed foods such as frozen dinners, instant soups, packaged meals, canned soups, and pasta meals which come in boxes.
Canned vegetables and canned pasta sauces are some of the worst.
The following are some ways to avoid high sodium:

High Sodium Foods

Eat turkey, chicken, unsalted tuna, lean beef, tofu, veal unsalted tuna, lamb or lean beef
Look for low sodium versions pasta sauces and cheeses. Try cooking meals in advance using the batch system from “The Dieter’s Last Resort” to save time. You can also make soups and cook frozen vegetables instead of using canned, choose items with 140-200 mg of sodium per serving if you must eat packaged foods.
For snacks, look for crackers or popcorn which is unsalted.
