Character vs. Talent
A while ago , I posted an entry about the importance of character when it comes to keeping and enjoying success in your life. Remember, talent can get you to the top it takes character to keep you there. Many people who achieve levels of success by means of their talents but who have deficits in their character end up either sabotaging their success of being destroyed by it:
A few examples of this are: Wolfgang Mozart, Edgar Allen Poe, Mitch Hedberg, Kurt Cobain, Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Vincent Van Gogh. All people who I have respect for in regard to their talent….but scarcity of character led them all towards substance abuse, suicide or other self destructive behavior patterns which ultimately led to their ruin.
How is this?
Well, to understand that we need to look at the difference between character and talent:
Talent deals with capabilities, skills and potential while character is what determines how talents are used. To give you an analogy, think of talents like tools in a tool box. You can take a hammer and use it to build someone’s home or you can use it to bash in their skull (don’t get any ideas, that’s just an example
).
How you use it does not make the talent good or bad or wrong or right or valuable or invaluable. The talent is simply a tool; character is what determines the manner in which that tool is used.
You see , character deals with the deeper issues of motives, identity and self-image….the talents are simply a way to express one’s character.
However, your character also plays a important role in how useful someone’s talents are to them. In other words, if a person’s identity and sense of self-worth is not consistent with their talents, it is likely that they won’t even use those talents.
You’ve probably known at least one person in your life that has talents they are letting “go to waste” simply because they do not value those talents as a part of who they are….this is because they don’t truly value themselves.
Sure, you may be able to use your talents in a manner which is inconsistent with your self-image…..but it won’t last long. Sooner or later, the use of your talents will snap back to something which is more consistent with your core sense of value and your personal motives…..your character.
But that’s not all…..
….depending on the will power of the individual, it is possible to keep up the facade for a time. However the inner dissonance which comes as a result can create a cauldron of personal turmoil which drives a person towards self-sabotaging behaviors.
Many times this is because low sense of self-worth leads someone to believe that they don’t ”deserve” the level of success that they have achieved. This creates a conflict between the person’s outer and inner world. However, the human psyche has an intrinsic need for consistency between one’s values and perceptions and their experiences.
Self-sabotage seeks to even things out by either punishing the person for the success or causing them to lose it altogether. This is precisely the reason why I have developed Value Driven Transcendence to empower someone to make the deeper changes in their character which lead to the natural acquisition of abundance and fulfillment.
Look forward to your comments and questions.
