How to Become a Leader that Inspires Others

18 November 2009

As I watch little kids in the playground, I amuse myself by attempting to spot a little Mahatma Gandhi or Stephen Covey in the making.  Here is one child who is like a general in the Art of War, organizing the other children in a game. Oh, this one has the charismatic aura of goodness exuded by Jesus, sharing snacks with others who don’t have any.

The reason I am doing this is because I am reminded of the long standing debate about whether leaders are born or developed. But no matter how many people disagree on this issue, I believe anyone can learn how to become a leader.

What are the skills of a leader? Stephen Covey was right on the mark when he held that change starts within oneself. One of the skills of a leader is to foster a desire for awareness. The hardest type of boss, manager or co-worker to deal with is one who does not know what he can and can’t do. They are like pit bulls—they are intractable and cannot be reasoned with because they have no insight into themselves.

If you want to know how to become a leader, first practice awareness. Examine your thoughts, feelings, ideas, values, beliefs and actions. If you find things in your conscience and life that need a changing, revising or redoing, you alone have the power to alter it.

Check for integrity and consistency. Some of the best leaders are those who can substantiate what they say by their actions. They “walk the talk”. If you cannot do this, you will never learn how to become a leader that people will believe because you are not credible.

The other skills of a leader are the ability to look beyond and see the greater picture, couple with the appreciation of the small elements that comprise it. For example what makes a good CEO? I would say one who is the driver of the vision and mission of the organization and who looks out for the bottom line, yet who also keeps abreast of his people at all levels. How to become a leader that will leave a lasting legacy for his company will be determined by the courage he possesses.

Covey had it right when he said, “I’m convinced that we can write and live our own scripts more than most people will acknowledge. I also know the price that must be paid. It’s a real struggle to do it. It requires visualization and affirmation. It involves living a life of integrity, starting with making and keeping promises, until the whole human personality – the senses, the thinking, the feeling, and the intuition are ultimately integrated and harmonized.”

If you are not where you want to be at the moment, write your own script. Learn how to become a leader that inspires others.
