The Fundamentals of Personal Achievement
The yardstick of personal achievement is like a magic measuring rod. Whip that baby out and everyone will see a different reading. In reality, many factors can be attached to it depending on the perceiving organism. Is it wealth, fame, relationships, possessions, professional merits? Is it awards, monetary gains, number of friends?
I have seen many people who outwardly seem to lead a fabulous life. They are eminently recognizable in high society circuits, they hobnob with the rich and famous, they own fabulous homes and travel in yachts and private planes. They are even featured prominently when I open magazine articles on personal achievement. I am quite certain they are envied by many.
When they fall from grace, we are left stunned. Some end up in jail, in drugs, in morgues. Often, observers attribute the cause of their downfall to a weakness or flaw of character.
Here is one of the fundamental principles of personal achievement. While the external trappings may dazzle many into believing these are the only things of importance, we must realize that personal achievement lies in investing in yourself. Ask Napoleon Hill who said, “the best way to sell yourself to others is first to sell the others to yourself.” But remember, you cannot sell that which you do not have inside.
Take note of this equation: personal achievement number = 3. Working on your having awareness of who you are and taking steps to learn and grow is the first step towards the goal of true personal achievement.
The second step is letting go of old methods of doing things that have not been working. People have a way of stubbornly hanging on to habits that may not be productive. Instead, create a new map to success. Remember another sage comment by Napoleon Hill, “Before success comes in any man’s life, he’s sure to meet with much temporary defeat and, perhaps some failures. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and the most logical thing to do is to quit. That’s exactly what the majority of men do.“
The last step to personal achievement is to decide. I will end by aptly quoting Napoleon Hill again to elucidate the point. “Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire and begin at once, whether you ready or not, to put this plan into action. Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.”
