Why do Red and Green taste better than White and Brown?

18 November 2009

Hey Humans!

So, have you ever been cruising through the doggy food section at your local grocery store with the intention of buying some delicious chow for your best canine buddy and you find yourself facing a dilemma?

Your eyes are instinctively drawn to the colorful bag of doggy food with the picture of a happy, tail-wagging pooch on the front of it.  As you stop in front of it, you smile, imagining how your canine pal will look up at you happily when you bring that bright, exciting looking bag home with you. You can almost smell the bacony goodness that will no doubt emanate from the top of the bag as you pull it open and watch your doggy jump with glee!  You are my hero!  Your puppy will bark.

But AAHHHH!!!!! The price then knocks you out of your reverie.  Your heroism comes at a high price. Suddenly, you wonder if what is inside that colorful packaging is really worth the cost. It’s not real bacon after all….it’s not real beef or chicken…

You slowly slink backwards, replacing the colorful bag with the jumping for joy puppy on the shelf.  You glance from left to right to make sure that no one is looking before lowering your eyes to the lowest shelf.

And there it sits, in a brown and white bag with no pictures, just simple lettering: DOG FOOD.

The vision of your homecoming changes. You imagine your puppy eying the bag, then you, with disbelief and disappointment.  Instead of being a hero, you’re nothing but a lousy cheap-skate. What is inside that bag might not even be edible. It may even be poison, who knows? All you can tell is that it is a THIRD of the cost of the other stuff….and you feel ashamed…but you want to buy it!  You’re a bad servant. You aren’t worthy of your pooches love, you are NOT dog’s best friend.

Hold On a Minute!  Before you are too hard on yourself, take each of those bags of chow in your hands. Look at the ingredients….and realize that they are the same. Sure, there might be differences, but in the end the generic chow in the white and brown bag and the super-duper-happy-puppy bag are pretty much the same thing.

The only differences: packaging and price.  See the guys who make the first bag just want you to believe that they have something different. When you buy it, you are paying extra, not for better food, but for an idea that they are trying to sell you.

They want you to think that your puppy will be happier with their food. But guess what? Dogs are smart! And we appreciate the food, we will never see that stupid smiley pup on the package. We Don’t Care what our food comes in as long as it ends up in our bellies.

Go ahead; buy the same stuff in the plain package at a third of the cost…In fact that is how you can really be my hero!  Cause you can use all of the money that you save to buy me a special treat…like a bigger house to run around in.

Be smart humans!

Ciao, Rocky
