21 Immutable Laws of Persuasion-#6:Integrity
Hey ! Welcome to the November issue of Genius in Leadership and the 21 Immutable Laws of Persuasion. If you are just getting into this, go ahead and check out laws 1-5 when you get a chance. The sixth law of persuasion is integrity. This has got to be one of the most commonly overlooked principles of persuasion. However, it is impossible to accomplish persuasion without using integrity, regardless of how well you apply the other 20 laws.
Integrity, means that your actions and words are consistent with one another across all areas of your life. It means that you practice what you teach and that you teach what you practice. People deeply resent it when someone tries to persuade them to do something which they themselves do not practice. Without integrity, you have no credibility with people…even if the things which you’re teaching are true.
While people can argue with your words, they can never argue with actions…especially when those actions bring tangible results. As the proverb says: “The man who says that it cannot be done should not interrupt the man who is doing it.” If you demonstrate your beliefs to people through consistent actions, you will often find that no words are needed to persuade them.
A great example of the persuasive power of integrity is Mahatma Gandhi. This is someone who persuaded millions of people to work together in a spirit of harmony towards a common goal.
On one occasion, a mother brought her child to Gandhi in hopes that the master would tell her son to stop eating so much sugar. Gandhi told her to come back in two weeks. Upon her return, Gandhi leaned down, looked the child in the eye and said: “Stop eating sugar!”When the mother asked: “Why didn’t you do that two weeks ago?” Gandhi answered: “Because two weeks ago, I was eating sugar.”
This story gives us a glimpse of the integrity which permeated this man’s life and which made him one of the most influential people in history. Such is the persuasive power of integrity.
