Why New Year’s Resolutions Suck
Just about any personal leadership development program or philosophy which is on the market today will address the statistics regarding New Year’s resolutions. You may have heard it: Over ninety percent of New Year’s Resolutions never make it into the second week of January, or maybe it’s February. I mean what does it matter? Either way, the goal becomes regret. So what is the problem? Well, keep reading because we are about to confront this New Year’s resolution issue head on and once we do, you’ll never have to worry about giving up on one again.
Unlike a lot of my peers in the personal leadership development industry, I don’t believe that the problem is lack of discipline, poor planning, perfectionism or a need for more motivation. You can have all of these things and still fail if one thing is not in place. That one thing is a strong sense of personal value in your goal which awakens your natural passion. You see, if over ninety percent of people are failing at something, I refuse to believe that the people can be at fault. The problem is not the people, the problem is the system. New Year’s Resolutions suck.
I am sure that this is not something you would be expecting a personal leadership development guru to say. However, let’s look at this from a logical standpoint for a second: if you REALLY want to change something or to accomplish something, or to break a bad habit, why wait until a certain time of year to do it? If you REALLY want it, the absolute passion and desire and even steaming anger which compels you to make the change or to pursue the goal won’t LET you wait another second.
When people procrastinate on things, it is not because they are lazy or unmotivated. It’s because they really don’t want to do it that bad. There is not a strong enough sense of personal value and passion which is compelling them to take action NOW. Is that going to change because it is a certain time of year? I doubt it. On the other hand, if you have enough conviction to really go after something and refuse to give up until you get what you want, waiting is usually impossible.
In other words, you are not going to care what time of year it is. Instead, the pursuit of the goal becomes more important than the date on the calendar. Dreams which have a strong enough sense of value attached have no need for perfect timing. Instead, waiting for the ‘right’ time to do something is a sure dead end road right into procrastination paralysis. There will never be a ‘right’ time, and our true desires should never be subject to such things.
So if you want to cultivate true personal leadership development, then let your personal sense of value in what you desire be your guide, not some silly date on the calendar. If the goal can be made subject to a date on a calendar, it lacks the true personal value to compel you to persist until you accomplish it. However, if the goal is important enough and if you want it so badly that you don’t consider waiting, you will most likely have the conviction to follow through.
