Christmas Time with Rocky
Well kids, it’s getting to be that time of year. The month of December is a build-up to our most beloved and most celebrated holiday, Christmas. Don’t go thinking that dogs don’t get all excited about Christmas too, especially those of us who have servants who remember that dogs are important family members when it comes time to passing the old presents around. Sure, I’ve never bought a Christmas present in my life. “My presence is your present”, I always say. But I have lived through my share of Christmases and I have finally figured out what they are all about. I didn’t always get it though.
Here’s how my revelation came about.
Rocky’s First Christmas: Too young to remember what happened. Probably I just rolled around in a box on the floor and pooped a lot. May have also peed on a few people.
Rocky’s Second Christmas: By this time I was old enough to go for walks. Noticed lots of lights in people’s yards. Also people brought trees inside with them. Weird. I get in trouble when I track in mud, but they bring in whole tree? Nonsense. People become excited when they see presents under tree, yet I get in trouble for leaving a present for my family on the doorstep? More nonsense.
Rocky’s Third Christmas: By now I’ve grown used to whole tree-in-house idea. But why do they leave cookies out on a plate when they go to bed and get mad at Rocky for eating them? Nonsense. Plus, do you even understand at all how tortuous it is for me to sit and not rip those huge socks off the mantle and chew them up? I feel like Tantalous. No cookies, No sockies to chew on. What rubbish.
Rocky’s Fourth Christmas: By now I have realized that humans maybe really do NOT like Christmas. They sure are stressed out all of the time. And they maybe decorate with all this green stuff to make them feel better about all of the green stuff that is flowing out of their wallets and purses. Just an idea, but I am starting to think that humans don’t really get what that Christmas is supposed to be fun. (I think).
Rocky’s Fifth Christmas: Okay. Got to see the Nativity Scene at last. NOW, I know what the skinny is. Christmas is the celebration of a miracle. And animals were invited! (cool) I like this baby who invited cows and horses to his birthday. Say what you want, but most of you humans are snobs. The only time that you think of including members of another species in one of your celebrations is when you want some entertainment.
Rocky’s Sixth Christmas: So this year will be my sixth Christmas, and I’ve finally figured it out. It’s about celebrating with your loved ones, for sure. It’s also about taking a page from the book written by that kid in the manger and inviting yourself to love more people and animals than you thought you had room for. You’ll get it from all angles this time of year, advertisers telling you that the only way to celebrate Christmas or to prove to your loved ones that you really love them is to run around like a chicken with your head cut off spending money until you’ve insured that you are in debt for the whole next year.
But you know better than that, don’t you?
Your pal, Rocky
