21 Immutable Laws of Persuasion-#9:Trance

Hey ! Welcome to the February issue of Genius in Leadership and the 21 Forbidden Laws of Persuasion. If you are just getting into this, go ahead and check out laws 1-8 when you get a chance. The ninth law of persuasion is trance.

As you might recall, the first law of persuasion was trance breaking, which must be accomplished before you can even have a hope of persuading someone. If you’ve not yet read about trance breaking be sure to check out that article.

Contrary to the common belief, trance is not about being in a blank faced half asleep state. Trance is simply a heightened emotional state which causes chemical changes in the body, such as endorphin release, and causes a person to be more susceptible to influence and persuasion. Everyone knows that emotions have the power to override people’s reasoning capabilities. But it’s also true that even logical reasoning  requires the assistance of the emotions in order to inspire action.

Just think about how many people you know (perhaps even yourself) who KNOW that they need to do something (or to stop) and they just aren’t doing it. That is, until they are influenced by a strong emotional state. This strong emotional state is trance, and if you want to persuade someone so that they will take action, you must know how to apply the law of trance.

So how do you master the art of trance? You use words and phrases which will create pictures, sounds and tastes, smells and feelings within your reader. The sensations invoke emotional responses within the brain which are just as vivid as the emotions created during the true experience. This is technique based on the five “languages of the body.”

For example, consider these phrases with the sensory words highlighted:

For creating visual effects:

Looking forward to a brighter future? See how greater self-confidence can light up your life!”

For creating auditory effects:

“Are you tired of being silenced by the voices of your own insecurities? Wait till you hear how learning to listen to your heart can explode your self-confidence!”

For creating tactile effects:

Feeling suffocated by the weight mediocrity? How would it feel to finally break free from insecurity and enjoy smoking hot self-confidence?

For creating gustatory (taste) effects:

“Same old rotten insecurities leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth?” Discover how greater self-confidence can drive you away from bitter failure to sweet success!”

For creating olfactory (smell) effects:

“Insecurity stinks, and even people you don’t know can smell it a mile away. But get ready to discover how self-confidence can be  a breath of fresh air for your social life!”

So that’s the 9th law of persuasion.
