Overcoming Subconscious Programming
I’ve received quite a few questions about how Value Driven Transcendence (VDT) helps a person overcome their negative subconscious programming, neuro-associative conditioning or “emotional impulses.”
Before I answer this, I encourage you to download and read the ebook “The Human Condition,” if you’ve not already done so. This has a clear cut scientific explanation of how subconscious patterns are altered, and I’ll be making references to it in this article.
Okay, so how do you overcome the beast of the subconscious?
Two words: proactive thinking.
I know, I know…I probably sound like Yoda right?
Let me explain…
First of all, the belief that subconscious programming controls your behaviors is based on a flawed paradigm: that your behaviors are a result of your conditioning instead of a result of your choices.
Things like positive thinking and “fake it till you make it” methods (and even some NLP techniques) only encourage you to “paint over” negative conditioning without actually getting to the root of it. Now this can work sometimes. But the problem is that it takes a LOT of willpower and discipline which causes most people to give up.
Not to mention that if the root of the subconscious impulse is never dealt with, it’s very easy to backslide.
Sound familiar?
So how is VDT different?
Well, to begin with, there are two things your subconscious programming does determine: automatic thoughts (you know, those that just kind of flash into your mind) and emotional desires. Both of these grow out of your subconscious programming, which is based on your drive to meet three basic emotional needs: security, excitement and validation.
At the core of these needs is the standard by which you measure value (your VQ).
We all value things based on whether or not we believe they’ll provide us with more security, more variety/excitement or a sense of validation and significance. The problem occurs when your VQ is out of alignment with what you really want. In other words, if you draw value from the approval of others, you’re more likely to let someone discourage you from pursuing your goals out of fear of criticism.
Now, this is just one example of a “value conflict,” something which comes from having a VQ based on standards which are exterior/beyond your control. This is what causes self-sabotage, and the more unconscious you are to this process, the greater influence it has over your choices.
But it NEVER disarms your freedom to choose.
You always have a conscious choice, and if something valuable enough is at stake, that choice can override any subconscious drive. The problem is that most people live their lives completely influenced by their subconscious desires…on autopilot, masking their true motives under the smoke of denial and rationalization.
When living your life on autopilot (See The Human Condition-3 autopilot devices), you’re not consciously aware of what’s driving your automatic thoughts and core emotional desires.
Now, this can be tremendously empowering, provided that your VQ is in alignment with your true desires. This is the consciously empowering stage (stage 4 from the Human Condition Ebook).
But if your VQ is out of alignment with what you want, you’re in the subconsciously disempowering stage. This is where most of my clients start out….it’s where I was for the first 26 years of my life.
Proactive thinking is the act of taking things off of autopilot and driving, it takes place during the 2nd and 3rd stages of behavior transformation: consciously disempowering and consciously empowering. It’s when you become consciously aware of what’s driving your disempowering behaviors so that you can start to make empowering choices.
This is where VDT uses The Law of Clarity (understanding your VQ and the source of your subconscious drives) to uncover the source of value conflicts which cause self-sabotage. Then, the Law of Elimination is applied to shed the beliefs which cause value conflicts. Of course, this must be followed by replacing these drives with Contribution based standards of value and following through with Perseverance.
As this process solidifies, deep changes take place in a person’s core character traits as their subconscious conditioning becomes based on a healthy VQ. Their automatic thoughts and emotional desires line up with what they really want…making them a powerhouse of confidence, passion, and motivation.
So you have four stages:
- 1. Subconsciously disempowering: VQ is out of alignment with what you want
- 2. Consciously disempowering: The Laws of Alignment (Clarity and Elimination)
- 3. Consciously empowering: The Laws of Motion (Contribution and Perseverance)
- 4. Subconsciously empowering: VQ is in alignment with what you want
While this is certainly not a quick fix process, it can happen sooner than you think.
The key is mastering the four laws and understanding the principles upon which they are based. Our multimedia course “A Genius Awaits You” covers this process in details. It comes with lifetime access to our new member’s only forum and to three other self-growth/personal coaching products for transforming your relationships, your financial life and your health.
