I read A Genius Awaits You, I listened to the mp3’s multiple times and I started doing the exercises in the Workbook.  What happened?

I woke up!

No I didn’t fall asleep while listening to the mp3’s.  I was driving for the most part.  I mean I woke up and started to finally grasp the reasons why my life was where it was.  Why did I get demoted from management positions twice?  Why did I get into debt and have to turn to Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University to get out?  Why was I 100 pounds overweight?  It all started to make sense.

I’d tried to take responsibility for my own circumstances before but I didn’t realize what that truly meant.  I’d tried to stop blaming other people, but I’d always let myself of the hook, to a degree.  I’d tried all different kinds of self-help books from a who’s who’s of authors.  Nothing stuck.  I just couldn’t get back to the root of all my problems until I read A Genius Awaits You.

Once I understood how valuing external things like approval, money and achievement (or what I call titles and importance) had gotten me off track, it all became crystal clear.  I finally had an explanation for my failures in life and for the first time ever I could take responsibility for them and really know what that meant.

Now that I know, what am I going to do about it you ask?

Number one, I’m going to keep going.  I have a good deal of the workbook remaining and several re-readings and listenings of A Genius Awaits You to go.  Number two, I’ve already made some changes in my life and I’ve seen the benefits.  I used to be a huge procrastinator at work.  If it involved confrontation, I wanted no part of it.  Difficult situations went straight to the backburner.  Now I’m hitting them head on much better than I used to.  I haven’t mastered them yet, and I know that takes time but I’m making progress.  I’m simply not basing my value on people’s approval anymore.

I’m starting to focus on being a servant leader instead of person who wanted a title so people would think he’s “hot stuff”.  I’m nothing without the hard work of my team and I want to make sure they know that.  Being a servant leader is my career right now so I’m doing everything I can to add value each day.

I’m also working on figuring out just what I want to do when I grow up.  I have many ideas relating to how our high school and college kids are educated, how people can get better at providing customer service, and one idea about becoming a more permanent part of the VQ Success family.  Perhaps by the time you read this that’s what I’ll be doing.

Finally, I’m starting to eliminate some things.  Yes, I know I have to master The Law of Clarity first, but it was plain to see that I had a few too many things on my plate and some of them needed to go.  So I started chucking them and I’m not looking back.

No excuses, no regrets.
